…and started just using the mobile site instead. I love Letterboxd. It truly is the best website for film lovers and enthusiasts. I’ve had a Pro membership for years now and love the type of granular detail it affords me at a glance. While I don’t review much, the members I follow and engage with have helped me discover a wealth of films and I’d like to believe I’ve returned the favor. So why only 3 stars and why stop using the app? One word: privacy. Take a look at your Privacy & Security > App Privacy Report folks. I can’t speak for you but this app tracks location and phones home that data more than any other app on my phone outside of YouTube, which I removed a long ago. I pay Letterboxd yearly so I feel it’s a gross violation of my trust. I was already wary about the new “Showtimes + tickets” feature being that the app never asked to use my location, essentially bypassing iOS’s built-in Location Services…but 2nd only to Google? Google! Hard pass. Delete! I will not be using this app until these practices change. I understand that Letterboxd uses various third-party APIs, etc, but it’s a big no from me. I get that such a thing is useful, I guess, for non-paying users and targeted ad help offset costs. However, Pro and Patron users don’t see ads and you have complete access to our viewing habits for your movie marketing needs. Explain. I haven’t decided yet if I’ll cancel my membership completely or just use the website via Safari where I can better control what information I wish to provide or not. As for the service/website itself, I do love Letterboxd. There are a few things I’d like to see like the ability to favorite cast and crew, build lists around said cast and crew instead of just films, better mechanisms to compare films against members I follow and a richer suite of account privacy options but even with those criticisms I would have still given the app a healthy 4 out of 5 stars. The app, due to privacy oversights, as is would only get a 2. 3 seems to balance the two views. Do better Letterboxd. Your users deserve better. Transparency would be a good start.

I’ve been using Letterboxd since 2022 and I LOVE it! By far the best movie app out there! The way it lets you track your movies you watch is super convenient and easy and nice. It’s nice and fun and easy to review and rate movies also. You can also make rankings for movies which the way it’s set up is great and really nice. Just in general it’s an extremely fun app to use and it’s nicely setup and very easy to navigate. Easy 5/5 star rating for me. If you aren’t on Letterbox already and are a cinephile, you NEED to get it! Such a phenomenal app!
