The Athletic Is Dead
NYT ran it to the ground. Articles now amount to puff pieces and rankings. Good to see everyone unsubscribing. Free Saad.
How the mighty have fallen
We used to have our own beat writers for all the teams. Now unless you’re a top 15 program, you’ll get basically nothing for your team 1 star for its sports I guess and the app is fine but since it’s content isn’t really, solid 2 stars The Athletic really has gone downhill.
The ads are just too much
For such incredible writing, in depth analysis, and coverage, stop with the ads. Its too much at this point. Increase the subscription rate and cut down on the ads. We pay for The Athletic because it IS a premium product. Don’t diminish that. Too many ads make the experience feel cheap, no one will pay to feel cheap. Get it together. You are selling out.
Not receiving newsletters
I used to receive the Athletic newsletters (the Pulse and others) but the emails stopped suddenly in February 2024. I’ve reached out multiple times to the Athletic support line to fix the issue but have been ignored. I asked if they would consider a refund if they were unable to fix the issue and they ignored those requests as well. No way to treat a longtime subscriber.
Can’t access subscriber coverage
Signed up for special through NY Times to receive access for $.50 a week. But it doesn’t let me into stories that say subscriber content. What gives?
Dont waste your time / money
Terrible user experience. The interface is so congested with ads that you cant read headlines a lot of the time. Often I will open an article and get a blank page with just an ad. I’ll try different things to attempt to read the article with no luck. Likewise, I couldnt cancel my sub through the app so it renewed without notifying me. I contacted customer service the next day asking for a refund and was denied. Now I have their crappy service/app for another full year. The Athletic has some good writers but their coverage is incomplete, they’ve over leveraged themselves on scoop merchants and let go of the actual talent. Just a mess of an organization with no idea what they’re doing. Not surprising coming from the NY Times. Caveat emptor. Save your money.
Great, minor glitch
Overall a great app with better content. Love the UI and personalization. I currently am experiencing a bug though where I can’t update the app icon itself. It works on my iPhone but not iPad (on latest version of both the OS and app). I’ve reached out via email and haven’t heard back correctly so was hoping this would be seen.
